Reaching for the Stars
42 years ago yesterday. 23 years ago today. Six years ago next week.

"We shall never forget them nor the last time we saw them, as they prepared for their mission and waved good-bye and slipped the surly bonds of Earth to touch the face of God."

-- Ronald Reagan

The arching sky is calling spacemen back to their trade
All hands! Stand by! Free falling!
And the lights below us fade.
Out ride the sons of Terra, far drives the thundering jet,
Out leaps the race Earthmen,
Out far and onward yet.

We pray for one last landing
On the globe that gave us birth,
Let us rest our eyes on the fleecy skies,
And the cool, green hills of Earth.

We've sailed the endless vacuum, seen many wondrous things
From the harsh bright soil of Luna to Saturn's rainbow rings.
We've tried each spinning space mote, and reckoned its true worth;
Take us back again to the homes of men and the cool, green hills of Earth.

My final watch is over, my travels nearing their end
And my only wish is to feel home soil beneath me once again.
Let the sweet fresh breezes heal me as they rove around the girth
Of our lovely mother planet of the cool green hills of Earth.

We pray for one last landing
On the globe that gave us birth,
Let us rest our eyes on the fleecy skies,
And the cool, green hills of Earth.

An elementary school teacher of mine was roommates with Christa McAuliffe in college. We had a special assembly that day...to watch the take off... I'll never forget.

*Sigh* You shame me, sir!

There was a time when I and the people around me lit candles on this day to remind people, to never forget, and to move onward. Time kills all things.

Or, in this case, time kills most things. You, sir, have become their candle.

Thank you.

I was in second grade when that happened, in Texas... So you can imagine that all the teachers were excited that one of theirs was going up... One of my teachers had actually brought in a little TV and was watching it while we took a spelling test.. I had finished early and was watching with her... One of those moments that I'll always remember where I was. :-/

Same here. We had a snow day, I came inside, and my mother was crying.

Aren't three-quarter-length sleeves "bad" in space?
