"Responsibility for our children's education begins at home."
"Tonight I ask every American to commit to at least one year or more of higher education or career training. This can be a community college or a four-year school. Vocational training, or an apprenticeship. But whatever the training may be, every American will need to get more than a high school diploma. And dropping out of high school is no longer an option. It's not just quitting on yourself, it's quitting on your country, and this country needs and values the talents of every American."

-- President Barack Obama

I started to reply to this, but it turned into a rant. :-/ Didn't want to take up your page-- but I have some STRONG feelings about this.

In short: I appreciate the need for everyone to have a HS diploma, and I think he's completely right.... but I don't appreciate the domino effect it's going to create, unless something else is done.

Yeah, I started turning ranty too.

But, to sum up, education and diploma are not the same thing. Plenty of people have the paper but not an education, and some people have fruitfully opted out of the system and done just fine. Of course, this is all just rhetoric, so we'll see where it goes.

If only the quality of an average high school education wasn't so dismally lacking, we wouldn't *need* further formal training to get a decent job...

If only the value behind a bachelor's wasn't so degraded, we wouldn't need extra training to stay competitive in said decent job...

So I'm some kind of super-patriot, then?

Yeah... I don't need POTUS to tell me this, my Dad instilled it into my butt over 20 years ago. Which is a big part of the reason I'm adding to my 8 year old's education by working with her over vacation to keep the learning going.
