DEAR MISS MANNERS -- Is it acceptable to have a big party for the end of child support being paid to an ex spouse?

GENTLE READER -- Only if you know people who would be charmed by your exultation at severing the responsibility for your child that is no more than is expected of every parent. And who would enjoy your sneer about the person who has been doing the daily job of rearing your child. Miss Manners is not among them.

I can name at least one instance where the end of child support was because the child was *living with* the parent who had been paying child support. So the theoretically custodial parent was actually collecting money fraudulently.

Yup, I can name at least one situation like this, too. And several where it's because the child has reached adulthood. Go, go, assumption of motives! (*sigh*)

Well, if it's because the child reached adulthood, wouldn't it be more appropriate to have a party FOR THE CHILD? Having a party to celebrate the end of child support payments seems to indicate a resentment for having had to pay support for that child all those years.
