Usually the story would be the billionaire's house burning down...
One of the early casualties of Hurricane Irene is apparently Richard Branson's Caribbean island vacation home, which was struck by lightning and burned to the ground early yesterday morning. About 20 people were in the house when the fire broke out around 4am, but no one was hurt.

The story, though, turns out not to be the loss of a huge mansion on a 74-acre private island, or even the stored photos and notebooks the billionaire lost. The story is that Kate Winslet carried Branson's 90-year-old mother to safety. I, for one, think that's pretty cool.

As for Irene, I'm hoping she's slow enough coming up the coast that we won't get serious stormy weather in the Poconos this weekend. (Looks like she shouldn't get that far north until later Sunday.)

It strikes me that Kate Winslet would have the upper body strength to do so. Kate Moss? Not so much...

I think that Kate Winslet carrying Branson's 90 yo mother to safety is exceedingly cool, yes.

Well, this is almost all good news!

The billionaire's house burned down. Although I'm not as happy about this as I normally would be. Branson may be the West's only current hope for a civilian manned space effort. :-/

And Winslet carries Mrs. Branson to safety. That is very neat!

However, I would plan on rain this weekend. Honestly. Irene is gonna go right over central MA on Sunday.

I did think that was about the best celebrity headline ever (and also had the same reaction as polypolyglot; who's too chunky to look good on camera now?)

Why did nobody think to fire up a cell phone camera? It could have been a Hollywood blockbuster at Reality TV prices!
