Oh the humanity...
There's an uproar going around after someone discovered that if you donate money to the Humane Society of the United States, only about a penny per dollar goes to local animal shelters. People are reacting in shock and dismay that they've sent their money to a large national non-profit and it hasn't ended up with their small local organization.

Seriously?

Donating to small animal-focused organizations that help in specific communities is a great idea, but it's not the primary mission of the national Humane Society. Their primary mission is large-scale advocacy and lobbying, along with assistance in major emergency situations. Frankly, it's great to hear that as much as a penny per dollar is finding its way to local organizations.

Here's a meme I've been trying to decide how best to propagate, as it needs to happen in moderation or everything will fall to bits:

A friend of mine was visiting a kill-shelter, and saw a dog that was there b/c its owner could no longer take care of it, and which, aside from kennel cough (which most animals pick up but is easily treated and which for some reason often gets used as excuse to put an animal down) was strong and healthy. The dog was on the 'soon to be put down' list.

So he wrote a cheque for the dog's adoption fee. Which basically meant "you don't get this cheque unless you place this dog."

Last week my friend got a letter that the dog had been placed and that they'd never had anybody do anything like that before.

Thing is, my friend is well equipped to evaluate the health and adoptabiliity of an animal; most of us are not...
