I'm planning to watch "The Homecoming
," the 1971 TV movie set on Christmas Eve in 1933 that ended up spawning "The Waltons.
" It's a considerably grittier universe; it is, after all, the height of the Depression in a poor rural area. The TV series really touched a lot less on that aspect of the family's life. Great story, though.
Then I plan to watch Pope Francis celebrate his first Midnight Mass. I used to love watching Pope John Paul II (back when he was healthy) and John Cardinal O'Connor (before he died) deliver the Mass. I guess I'm an odd Jew, but I certainly have an appreciation for the tradition and pomp of the evening's celebration. Pope Francis has also really impressed me with his open-minded approach to the modern world: "Who am I to judge?"
Merry Christmas to one and all!
