Starbucks is trying to combat the recent slide in their stores' profitability, and the perceived slide in quality and reputation, by scheduling remedial espresso-shot-pulling lessons for their tens of thousands of baristas.
This is actually quite a daring move on their part, and I have a lot of respect for their stated goal of improving their product despite the brief disruption to their businesses and to their customers' caffeination plans. Since this is likely to result in better coffee, I have to say I'm all for it.
Meantime, I encourage everyone who might otherwise visit a Starbucks this evening to take an opportunity to find another nearby coffee shop, ideally a locally owned one, and try what they're offering. You'll find that many cafes and espresso bars are taking advantage of the Starbucks outage this evening to tempt new customers with discounted or even free drinks.
If you're in or around Ithaca, try a Gimme! Coffee or one of several Gimme! outlets, such as the Queen of Tarts or Smart Monkey Cafe, or other local shops like Stella's and Juna's. (Last chance to try Juna's. They're closing!) If not, look around. I bet you'll find good coffee a stone's throw away.
