It's crazy how "chatty" modern computers are, i.e. how much network traffic they generate compared to their predecessors of just a few years ago. The OS and many applications these days "phone home" frequently to see if there are updated versions out, but also in some cases to share information about your existence that you might just as soon keep private. If you want to know when software on your Mac is making a connection, Little Snitch is worth having. (Is there similar software for Windows that monitors outbound network connections? I don't know.)
