Here's why you should turn on Gmail's SSL security feature.

All it takes to steal someone’s Gmail login account is to intercept any transaction since every single one, even images, pass a cookie which contains the session information. Spoof the session, and you get free reign to the account -- including the ability to change your password.

the real question is why they would give you the option to not have it on>?????

Encrypting everything makes the user experience slower, and makes the system expensive in processing power and bandwidth. It's not a great reason, but it's the reason.

On top of that, there are still people using browsers with poor SSL support. At least that number is shrinking but there's still too many IE5 users. bleck...
