AIM hackery

I'm getting kinda tired of random IMs coming out of the blue from screen names whose users didn't send them. If I answer, some of them get pissy because they think I IMed them out of the blue. At the very least, everyone gets confused.

This afternoon, I got the question "What would it take to bring the world back from the brink of a zombie invasion?" from such a random user, and of course replied, "We could always distract them with banana pancakes..." That must've seemed odd, out of context. :-)

Some brief Googling hasn't revealed anything about this, but I may be looking wrong. Anyone know what's behind this nonsense? I'm assuming it's some sort of bot or spyware that runs on someone's PC, grabs two random screen names from their buddy list, and sends an innocuous-sounding message from one to the other. Or something like that. The point escapes me; I suppose they could be harvesting valid AIM screen names for future spamming.

While I know I could block IMs from screen names who aren't on my buddy list, that would make it impossible for real people who came by my contact info legitimately to reach me. That would suck.
