Powell: Muslim-Americans are Americans - Mark's Journal
Powell: Muslim-Americans are Americans
I'm also troubled by -- not what Senator McCain says -- but what members of the Party say, and it is permitted to be said: such things as, "Well, you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim." Well, the correct answer is he is not a Muslim. He's a Christian; has always been a Christian. But the really right answer is, "What if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country?" The answer's "No, that's not America." Is there something wrong with some seven-year-old Muslim American kid believing that he or she could be President? Yet, I have heard senior members of my own Party drop the suggestion he's Muslim and he might be associated with terrorists. This is not the way we should be doing it in America.

I feel strongly about this particular point because of a picture I saw in a magazine. It was a photo essay about troops who were serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. And one picture at the tail end of this photo essay was of a mother in Arlington Cemetery. And she had her head on the headstone of her son's grave. And as the picture focused in, you could see the writing on the headstone. And it gave his awards -- Purple Heart, Bronze Star; showed that he died in Iraq; gave his date of birth, date of death. He was twenty years old. And then at the very top of the headstone, it didn't have a Christian cross. It didn't have a Star of David. It had a crescent and a star of the Islamic faith. And his name was Karim Rashad Sultan Kahn. And he was an American. He was born in New Jersey, he was fourteen years old at the time of 9/11 and he waited until he could go serve his country and he gave his life.

As usual, Colin Powell is far more eloquent than I am able to be. A lady in my office started the "I won't vote for Obama because he is a Muslim" thing with me, and all I could do was first gape at her, and then start gibbering unintelligibly. A moratorium was promptly placed on political discussions in the office...at least in mixed (Dems + Repubs) company. When my liberal butt isn't in the office, they can talk all the nonsense they want :)

Thanks for putting this sort of stuff up. It's easy to forget over here that American politicans aren't all complete bastards all the time.

I've been e-screaming that at people since this whole thing started- I mean, okay, "He's a terrorist/in with terrorists" is ignorant and wrong, but were it true, sure, that'd be something serious.
But he's a Muslim? The fact that he's had to deny that makes me sick at some of the people in this country. How does this make the American Muslims feel? It's sickening.
I realize he's Christian, but nobody should have to deny something like that, as though it's some sort of mark of shame.
I got into this with someone who thought pointing out that I'm a Jew would make me agree and went, "Really? I'm supposed to agree with a bunch of people spitting out a religion like a swear word, and using it to persecute a man?"
As a Jew, I know how that feels. No, thank you. That's sickening.

Re: log cabin

This type of thing is the reason why, even if he ran as a Republican, I would probably vote for Colin Powell.

I've said this for years!

Re: log cabin

Given that Powell -is- a Republican, I think it's pretty safe to assume that--if he ran for something--he'd run as a Republican. IMHO, there are both bozos and statesmen in both parties.
