Oh, and did I mention...?

Last night at about 11, before watching the evening's CBS sitcoms from the beginning of the night, I popped a melatonin, knowing how hard it is for me to go to sleep earlier than usual. After all, having to get up before 5 means I ought to try to be asleep by 12! (Earlier than that just ain't gonna happen.)

I didn't have any caffeine after lunch as I usually do, again knowing I was going to have to get to sleep early.

So why did I stare at the inside of my eyelids (with periodic breaks for some TV or Newsweek) all night? I ended up giving up entirely at about 3:30, knowing that with my alarm set before 5, less than 90 minutes of sleep would be utterly useless. Ironically, my cell phone alarm, set as a backup just in case, turns out to have been set for 4:59 pm. I wonder if my subconscious noticed that before I went to bed, and kept me awake. :-) Not that the clock radio wouldn't have woken me.

Ah well. It meant I got to watch last night's "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," which was absolutely remarkable. I'd been wondering why there were reruns all last week. Turned out his mother died on December 1st, and this was his first show after returning from her funeral in Scotland.

What do you do when your schtick includes being honest with your audience and talking about your life anyway, and your mum's just died? Well, you talk about your mum, and your family, and the funeral. And it worked. I suppose there may have been some viewers who were in the mood for mindless humour who tuned out, but I don't imagine many people did. He didn't spend the whole hour talking about her, but he did show some fun clips of her appearance on his show soon after he started, and her outing with RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan. (No, really.)

Then the show went on with guest Chi McBride (who also talked a bit about Craig's mother) and a performance by Seal.

Tonight, I'm sure Craig will focus on being funny even if he's not quite in the mood, but last night undoubtedly helped him get past her passing. If it's sitting unwatched on your DVR, watch it. Or keep an eye on YouTube or CBS.com for clips. It was really something. So much so that I sent Craig an e-mail to tell him how remarkable I thought the show was and what a good picture he'd painted of his mother.

So this morning, I'm operating on coffee (that for some reason doesn't taste very good, even though it's the same stuff I've been brewing at home) and granola bars. I'll probably hit the Burger King for something breakfasty on the way out of here, then I've got a long day of running around ahead of me, complete with two meetings on campus. I may just stay there in between them. We'll see how things go.

Then tonight, I'll get to watch last night's "Boston Legal" finale, which I'm really looking forward to. Complete with scotch; the planned cigar may not work, thanks to the likely rain in the forecast.
