This is one of the pictures I'm happiest about from Wednesday night's visit to Cornell's Lab of Ornithology for the CAAIA annual meeting and an improbably engaging talk by Dr. Andrew Farnsworth. (Who knew birders could be so interesting?)

That is a lovely picture! Do you know what gives the effect of a wide beam running diagonally through the tree?

It's a lens flare... an effect of bright light reflecting internally within the lens. Aiming the camera near a strong light source, such as the sun, will usually result in some artifacts like that.
