It pays to ask the butcher...

Just went to the P&C to pick up some beef to grill to help a friend celebrate a new job (nice to get some good news today) and to celebrate the awesome weather. The affordable steak selection looked a little thin, without getting into the stuff you need to marinate and it'll come out tough anyway, and I decided I didn't want the $19.99/lb (!) grass-fed steaks they had. (If I'd had more time, I'd have defrosted some of my already-bought local beef from my own freezer!) So I asked the butcher what he suggested for grilling, and he walked over to the case with me.

"This sirloin would be great," he said, "but I only have one of them until tomorrow. These ribeyes would be fantastic, for $11.99/lb. Oh, but this standing rib roast is on sale with your Wild Card for $5.99/lb, and it's exactly the same thing as the ribeyes, just not sliced. Got a good knife at home? You can slice it exactly how you like it. Or if you can wait a sec, I can slice it for you."

So I just got five ribeye steaks at half price, custom cut to order, because I asked the butcher his opinion. Might also have to go back and pick up another of those standing rib roasts while they're still on sale, and toss it in the freezer, cause that would be nice to roast when roasting weather returns. (Or maybe Mo can do a cut like that for me one of these weeks! I'll gladly pay more for better meat.) If you like steaks and don't mind cutting your own, or don't mind asking the butcher for a custom cut, you might want to grab some of these while they're on sale.
