Cornell had such a shaky start to the season in the fall that everyone pretty much dismissed the idea of the Big Red getting to the post-season playoffs. Some friends booked vacations that now mean they'd miss the ECAC tournament if Cornell makes it. That's seeming much less unlikely; Cornell is 7-1-2 over the last ten games since the beginning of January! Saturday night's win saw them come from a 3-1 deficit in the third period to tie the game with 14 seconds left in regulation, and win in overtime. Now that's exciting hockey!
One of the group is a new friend who jumped at the chance to see Cornell play Union again, after enjoying the home game a few weeks ago. She's a friend of a few friends, and in fact went to Cal Tech with zikzak5. (No, she's not single.)
The Friday night game is in Schenectady, and Saturday's game (an afternoon one for a change) is in Troy, and we generally stay in downtown Albany not because it's cheapest, but because it's not Schenectady or Troy, and because it offers lots of good food and drink within walking distance. Since we've gotten in the habit of staying at the downtown Hampton Inn, we also get a free hot breakfast that's not art, but it's satisfying. We sometimes manage to get there before the kitchen closes after the Friday game, and take advantage of the improbably good hotel restaurant for snacks. They have a four-star chef, and even though the menu's pretty affordable, it is art.
If you want to catch the games without heading to Albany, both are televised. Friday's 7pm game at Union is on Time Warner Sports in both Capital District and CNY districts, and Saturday's 3:30pm game at Rensselaer is actually on the NHL Network. Keep an eye out for me. I'll be the one wearing red.
