Civic Duty (217.4)

It's been a long time since I was last called for Jury Duty, but the summons arrived in the mail the other day. I'm to report next Thursday afternoon for Town of Ithaca Court; the courthouse is actually in the City of Ithaca, as with most Town government buildings. Go figure.

I guess the Town courthouse is part of the Town office complex that's in the former downtown post office, judging by the address. Easy enough to find, and easy enough to find something to eat nearby before I report.

They make a point of telling you they won't reimburse for parking, which means unless you happen to live in walking distance -- unlikely if you're a Town of Ithaca resident -- you have to pay to serve on the jury, either by using public transportation or paying to park. The mailer doesn't specify whether they reimburse for meals or pay for service. I think the last time I served, on a county jury, there was a per diem of something like $10/day to cover lunch and parking. I can afford to pay for these if I have to, but especially with no more free-first-hour in the downtown lots, it'll be frustrating how fast $1/hour will mount.

Of course, I also have no idea how long this could take. I wouldn't think Town Court gets an awful lot of serious cases, but you never know. At least Cornell keeps paying me. No idea whether Thursday afternoon will be it, or I might find myself there for several days.
