The Big Apple? - Mark's Journal
The Big Apple?
No, this isn't a post about New York City selecting Cornell to start a high-tech campus yesterday, but that's pretty cool, too.

This is about the possibility that I might end up with a job in New York working for a particular technology company. A contact at said company had forwarded me a job posting last week, suggesting it might be up my alley, and I agreed. Well, last night during dinner at a friend's, I got a phone call from a guy in California, and ended up on the phone with him for a half hour.

The job would be in their executive briefing division, a small group that does presentations to decision makers. I would have to be based in NYC, and couldn't really telecommute. I'll be honest, I would rather stay in Ithaca, but if I can't get a job here, NYC is one of the relocation options worth considering.

What makes it especially worth considering is that, on the strength of my resume and my years of writing for TidBITS, and I guess last night's conversation, he has me on his "short list" of top four or five people he's looking at so far -- and that's without my having actually applied yet. He did say that if he gets a raft of internal applicants who are hugely qualified, that may change, but he seems to think I'd be a great option. Very, very nice to hear.

Not much is going to happen in the next couple of weeks, for obvious reasons, but he said to go ahead and apply, and he'll likely be in touch early in January about phone interviews, in-person interviews, and eventually, trial presentations. (He already told me what the topic of the presentation is going to be, so I could start reading up. Given the topic, I won't even really need to.)

I dunno but I think that sounds like a GREAT phone call. It's fun to fall into things like that. And even if it doesn't work out, it has to be encouraging and validating. Cool.

Awesome! If nothing else, hopefully it will be a good experience with interviewing and whatnot. Fingers crossed for you!

Wow... that's exciting!

I wish you all the best things, and I'd miss you if you moved, but what an opportunity!
