Do I want to take a daily 9:05 class? - Mark's Journal
Do I want to take a daily 9:05 class?
Probably not, honestly, but I suppose it's something I'm capable of if I decide I really want to.

I haven't taken advantage of the staff benefit of enrolling in one course per semester since I started working at Cornell twelve years ago, and it occurred to me the other day that now's really the time to think about doing it this semester.

One of the things I've wanted to learn for a while is Arabic, and Elementary Arabic I is offered in six sections, each five days a week, at 9:05, 10:10, 11:15, 12:20, or 1:25. I could take the class later in the day, but 9:05 has the advantage of not interfering with my usual 10-6 work hours. Of course, I'd have to get to campus way earlier so I could park beyond North Campus and walk to central campus by 9. Yuck.

Taking the 1:25 class is starting to sound like a better and better idea! It might be an issue on the occasional Friday I'd need to leave early for a hockey road trip, but I have a feeling I'll be doing a lot less of that this season.

And I'd get to ask for Yom Kippur off from my Arabic class. :-)

I have no interest in learning Arabic and I'm not Jewish but seriously I'm reconsidering both just to be able to do that!!!

Arabic is high on my list if I ever have enough to get Rosetta Stone. (Not really interested in a class at this point, though I suppose I should see if its offered at Brockport)

love the idea of asking YK off of Arabic

9:05? strange class times

Classes used to be 50 minutes long, starting on the hour, with 10-minute breaks between classes, but as the campus spread out, people started to complain about ten minutes not being long enough to get between buildings. They made the breaks 15 minutes, but since the faculty refused to give up five minutes of instruction time, they pushed each time slot later instead. I think this all happened not long before I got here as a freshman.

That's awesome (asking for the holiday off).

Why Arabic? I'm just curious. I don't have a lot of friends interested in learning Arabic.

10 - 6, not 10 - 7? Unless you're not taking a lunch break, I'm doing this wrong...

I'm hardly ever taking an entire hour for lunch, and I'm hardly ever out the door in a road-runner-like puff of dust at 6:00:01, either. This is just the hypothetical "9-5" day shifted an hour.

I think that the ability to take courses is one of the very best perks of your job, and I am so envious. At my university, I have to be enrolled in a degree program before the university will support taking classes, and even that is only a half-off deal.

So lucky you!

Arabic is a beautiful language... I think that you should enroll in the course and then educate the rest of us as you go! :)
