Bottle Service (211.2) - Mark's Journal
Bottle Service (211.2)
Some enterprising students decided to capitalize on the fact that this is a Pepsi campus, thanks to a massive yearly donation from Pepsico, and are offering nightly deliveries on campus of Coke, bottled water, Red Bull, Gatorade, and Snapple, in 4-packs, 6-packs, and 12-backs, depending on the item. Unfortunately, by calling themselves "Big Red" and bringing their pickup spot onto campus, they caught the attention of the folks who monitor misuse of trade names and misuse of campus property.

A little digging soon revealed that the students were running the business out of one kid's dorm room, using his university-provided Internet access, both of which are expressly prohibited by the room contract.

Turns out they're taking orders, running to Target to buy what's been ordered, and then bringing the stuff to campus at what's both a nice markup for them, and a reasonable price compared to buying individual bottles from campus eateries. A nice service for those who don't have their own cars, I suppose, but not the right way to go about it. They're going to get a cease-and-desist order, though I imagine they could start over with a different name, different base of operations, and no pickup spot on campus. (Delivering to individuals in dorms isn't really problematic, since there's a long history of pizza places doing just that, for example, but setting up a pickup spot on campus without paying for a vendor permit or whatever is pretty cheeky.)

Uhhhh ...

Tsk tsk ! someone is paying a boatload of tuition so that a college kid who has too much time on his/her hands can open a convienience store outa' a dorm room. Amazing. Just amazing.

They better watch out or they'll get the crap sued outa' them !

If they just make a couple of changes they should be good. Get an off site email address, deliver to the ordering students (or even have a once-a-night delivery at each dorm building for convenience), and just change the wording of the marketing material to indicate they are a pick up and delivery service for local retails stores (target, etc.). No brand info in there, no point of sale in a form, just a delivery service.

I know it's against the rules, but it's pretty enterprising. Hope they can figure out a legal way that is still profitable to make it work.
