I think I just adopted a dog (211.2)
This afternoon's plea from the SPCA that a few particular dogs, Icarus included, had been there for months and really needed forever homes soon, was very effective!

I had thought a friend was going to check out Icarus a few weeks ago, but it turned out he never saw Icarus and adopted another dog.

So, I filled out a dog adoption application and sent it to the SPCA this afternoon. They responded pretty quickly that everything looks in order. I'm terrified, but I think I'm doing the right thing.

Also, I think I have a line on a used crate and a leash. Somewhere, I have food and water dishes. Molly says she's going to give me some old toys. I'm open to suggestions of what else I need, and donations of anything I should have that you've got sitting around!

How big is he? If he has storm anxiety and is the right size, he can have Thor's Thundershirt. It didn't work for Thor, but it works on "most dogs".

If he's a power chewer, we buy elk antlers from Best Bully Sticks, but you have to be careful, Indy did break a tooth on them. (but they are the only things he can chew for more then a few moments before they break)

If you're going to be walking the dog on a regular basis, I highly suggest a harness. It's better for you and the dog :) You can get them at any Petsmart/Petco/whatever, usually in either nylon (cheaper) or leather (longer lasting).

Thanks. Definitely planning on an Easy Walk type harness.

Dog Stuff

You may want to consider getting a dog bed - placed on the floor, it gives pooch somewhere to snooze and feel secure that it's his ... depending on the kind of dog, a Kong might be a good chew toy - they come in different sizes, and are pretty sturdy and long lasting. Leads - there's this thing called, I think, a " Gentle Lead " that has a loop that goes around a dog's muzzle - I have never used one ( on the resident Pomeranians ) but I have heard that they are great for training / going for walks because the dog is being directed by the head and not the neck or chest. (( Our two are in chest harnesses, and IMO the harnesses are pretty in-effective in behavior correction )). Good luck, and enjoy your new doggie ! :-)

OK ...

It's called a " Gentle Leader " and having just looked it up, I personally would use one of these ONLY for going on walks, not for full-time wear ! Apparently the GL does impede, to some degree, the dog's ability to fully open its mouth. If your dog already walks well on a regular lead, a muzzle harness may be overkill ... guess it's all trial and error :-))

Thinking of the lyrics to "Blinded By The Light," it would be amusing if that were Icarus's favorite song.
