Penny's doing well (209.4) - Mark's Journal
Penny's doing well (209.4)
It's been eight days, and I'm really glad Penny is here! She's ludicrously well behaved, and clearly was very well trained by someone. Still not diving into her food, but has been eventually downing one cup a day. She should be eating a cup twice a day. I know from what the SPCA told me that she has been a slow eater there, too, so I'm not worrying too much.

We got out on a couple of big excursions this weekend, including the Ellis Hollow Fair yesterday afternoon and a concert in the "beer garden" at Northstar Pub this afternoon. There are lots of photos on Facebook.

Having to stop back to the house between jaunts, not being able to stop at the store if she's with me unless someone else is around who can hang out with her when I go into the store... all going to take some getting used to. I think she's worth it.

One thing we do with our dogs is we feed them dry kibble for breakfast and for dinner we mix in a couple spoons of canned natural dog food. Works like a charm.

I'm trying to avoid "bribing" her to eat by adding fancier food to what she's been used to at the shelter. I know she'll eat if I put canned wet food in, but I don't want her to get used to that.

Some dogs are self eaters. Laura was like that. She'd eat when she wanted and what she wanted. There were days that she'd have almost nothing at all, then other days that she was licking the pattern of the bottom of the bowl.

Serrah, on the other hand, would eat what you gave her as soon as you gave it to her. We knew she wasn't feeling well on the days that she didn't eat.

It just may be how Penny is. So long as she's happy and healthy, I wouldn't worry about it. It's when she stops eating entirely that I'd get worried.

Well -

Something you could try is taking only a half cup of her kibble, moistening it VERY slightly with some hot tap water, stir that around, and see if she's more attracted to it. The hot water should ( in theory ) enhance the aroma ... unless her food smells yucky to begin with this might work ...

Re: Well -

I actually tried that on the second day or thereabouts. She eventually wolfed down the wet food, but after leaving it so long that I figure she would've eventually wolfed down whatever was there... just as she has each day since.
