Just start writing, right? (211.0)
I've been trying to get back into the LiveJournal habit, and I keep contemplating what to write about, but really, it's just about starting to write. The words will flow. Eventually, I'll find the topics.

Right now, I'm watching "Black Box," a new ABC series that's premiering after tonight's "Grey's Anatomy." I like the concept, a doctor who's bipolar, and told my TiVo to record it on the strength of one of the promos I saw a few nights ago, even though most of the promos showed awful pacing. 18 minutes into the pilot, I see the pacing problems aren't limited to the promos, but the show has its moments. I'll at least give it to the end of the pilot, and maybe a second episode.

"Grey's Anatomy" ended with the weirdest cover of Starship's "We Built This City," a slow-paced jazzy version that's actually a lot like the background music in "Black Box."

Wait-- those previews were depicting bipolar disorder? I would have guess schizophrenia...

Now that the pilot is over, what are your thoughts?

I would bet there's some schizophrenia in there, too, but one of the other characters (an episodic patient) got a schizophrenia diagnosis, so maybe not.

I'll give it a second episode. I'm curious where they can go with it without having a "patient like me of the week" pattern.

When Kelly Reilly's character addressed the conference in the way that she did, I mentally compared it against some TED conferences I'd seen online. It sounded more like what a life coach might say than a medical professional.

I suspect this show may have the same problems that House did: How can we root for a character that is not very sympathetic, and wouldn't be if we had to deal with them in real life? Yet House lasted a long time (arguably a season or two longer than it should have)

That's why I'll give it a second chance. "House" worked well because there was a good ensemble around the (seemingly) unlikable character, and these guys deserve a chance at building that ensemble.

Last night's Grey's Anatomy ended with a strange cover of "Like a Virgin"

Yeah, that one wasn't bad. For whatever reason it didn't seem as alien as the "We Built This City" cover.
