Driving for Lyft (216.8)

I haven't talked about it a lot, but I've been casually driving for Lyft for about a month, partly to inform the long article I've been writing about ridesharing services reaching Ithaca.

Mostly, it's been fine. Nothing too weird. The most noteworthy ride was late Saturday night, after I'd taken lots of music photos downtown and turned the Lyft Driver app on, on a whim, as I headed back to my car.

I pretty quickly got a ride request and picked up a couple on campus at 1am and dropped them off downtown. Before I could turn driver mode off, I got another request from an address I recognized as Buffalo Wild Wings.

Aha, I thought, someone went to watch the fight and now needs a ride home! Well, five New Jersey tourists piled into the car for a ride back to Hector. Yup, I got to drive to and from a rental house next to Chateau Lafayette Reneau on Seneca Lake at 1:30 in the morning.

On my way back, I got another ride request for a Collegetown pickup while I was still a half hour out. Luckily he just needed to go to East Shore Drive, but when I got home after 3, the dogs were not amused. Anyway, if the closest driver is 30 minutes away, there just aren't enough drivers!

A Sunday afternoon ride bore that out; the guy was very grumpy that it took so long for him to get a ride. (Also that he got dog hair on his suit. Oh well.)

I'm probably going to be doing LESS driving for Lyft in my new car, since I don't want to use up limited lease miles. (I had a LOT of miles left on the lease that just ended.) But there's definitely demand.

If you want to try driving for Lyft, in Ithaca or elsewhere, use my first link and we'll both get bonuses up to $200 depending on how much you drive!

If you want to try riding, use the second link for a $10 credit on your first ride, and I'll get a $10 bonus.
