How long will we need parking lots where we work? (221.5)

We were just talking the other day at Cornell about how building parking on college campuses is becoming an outdated idea.

We're almost to the point where our cars can drop us off at work and go park themselves at a perimeter lot, then come back for us when we need them. (Students might also be able to drop themselves off at class, though maybe it's more impractical to have thousands of students dropped off at once.)

I was reminded of this by sajego posting a video about Tesla software 10.0, which includes Smart Summon -- a new feature that lets you tell your car to come pick you up! I don't think it has the ability to drop you off and then go park itself, though. Yet.
