When I was a kid and a college student, and a bit beyond, the family tended to do dinner and a musical in NYC, escaping back to my parents' house before midtown got ridiculous and enjoying snacks and champagne and Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit and watching the ball drop on TV as midnight arrived.
There were a few years where I went to friends' parties or ended up at Felicia's Atomic Lounge, which was a snazzy place to ring in the New Year among friends.
Last night turned out to be a wonderful combination of a small dinner party at a friend's amazing new house with great food and several people I enjoy, followed by a '20s speakeasy themed party hosted by other friends, wrapping up with the tail end of the excellent live music event at Agava, where I am (to say the least) a regular. I ended up spending the evening with lots of people I'm happy to see, superb food and drink, and many fine hugs.
One of the advantages to ending up at Agava is that if I have too much to drink, I can walk home. It's not a short walk, and it was chilly last night, but it would be doable. I didn't end up drunk enough to worry about it, and in fact offered rides to a few others, but it's nice to have the option.
Today was a nice relaxing day to start the new year and the '20s, starting with a bagel and whitefish salad, and a maple latte, complete with plenty of couch time with the pups, capped off with more superb food and drink with friends.
I look forward to spending time with many more of you in the days and weeks to come. Happy New Year!
