Obituary (210.0)

I spent a chunk of Sunday helping a friend outline an obituary for her father, by writing down a bunch of questions and prompts so she could fill in the blanks, and then a chunk of Monday turning it into sentences and paragraphs for her.

This friend is someone I was really just starting to get to know in late winter when the world shut down, and while I've seen her in person a couple of times since, I'm sad that I never got to meet her dad, who died almost two weeks ago. Especially as I've distilled everything she and her mom had to say as they filled in the blanks I set in front of them, I feel like I would've really liked him.

I've written several news articles about people dying, some of which have veered more toward obituary than others, and this can be an especially challenging task when I'm writing about the death -- and life -- of someone I knew or cared about.
