He must be an editor...

While I was at my folks' house this weekend, my father wandered into the living room, where I was sitting reading my Clancy book, to ask how to spell "cell phone."

"It's two words, with cell spelled 'c-e-l-l,' right?"

Considering how much the encroaching lackofspaceisms bother me ("backyard" when you mean "back yard," or most alarming of all, the recent "cornflakes" instead of "corn flakes" in the Paper of Record), I was glad my father took the time to make sure he was spelling it right.

After a moment, when he'd wandered back into his den, I realized he wanted to know so he could spell it right in an e-mail. Since he can still count the number of e-mails he's sent, ever, without taking off his socks, I had to chuckle at this, too.

Today's extra-long drive back was worthwhile; more on that later. :-)

A surprise detour...

My friends Kyle and Kally had a baby eleven days ago, just a few days after I saw them in New Jersey. ("No, I'm due Tuesday. No problem. Won't have a baby this weekend.")

Since they live not too far from my path back from my folks' house to Ithaca, I figured I'd see if they were up for a visit. I called, and Kyle was at work, but Kally gave me directions to their place.

Not only did I get to spend some time with Kally and Kyla (their daughter) at home, I also went with them to grab Kyle at work for his lunch break. He did quite a double-take when he looked up, saw Kally and his daughter, and then realized as he looked away that I was standing there, too.

I ended up pausing in my journey for a couple of hours, and added about 45 minutes of driving time, but it was obviously well worth it! Kyla looks a bit grumpy in some of the pictures but she was also making plenty of other faces, including some happy ones.

She's tiny, but has looooong fingers, and big hands and feet! Her dad wears size 13 shoes, so she'll probably take after him that way...
