Newton's third law of distribution of commas?

Today I've been pummeled by text that uses a comma between two separate sentences when a period would be appropriate, and by text that uses a period in the middle of a single sentence, dividing it into two chunks that can't stand on their own. I found myself wishing the perpetrators could be convinced to redistribute the commas so those with too many could help out those with too few. As with food and medicine, there are plenty of commas to go around; they just need more equitable distribution. :-)
