My next vacation

Most of the photos of Queen Mary 2 don't manage to convey her scale -- the staggering size of the vessel. This one, which accompanies the MSNBC article about the world's largest ocean liner's arrival in New York Harbor this morning, taken along 42nd Street in midtown Manhattan, offers just a bit of visual perspective.

Of course, the transatlantic fares will start at about $1500 for cramped inside quarters (no window) and go up to about $27,000 for the fancy penthouse accommodations, for a six-day voyage, so I probably won't be doing this any time soon! But a transatlantic ocean voyage is certainly one of my longtime dreams, and I hope to do it some day.

To give you an idea of how big this thing is... it's three times the size of RMS Titanic. At high tide, it would clear the bottom of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge by only 13 feet. (Sailing her into the harbor at low tide instead seems like a good idea.)
