On Johnny Carson's last night hosting "The Tonight Show," Comedy Central did the unthinkable... they cancelled all their programming for that hour and a half. All of it. They put up a simple image with some text along the lines of, "We're watching Johnny, and so should you."

He wasn't Tonight's first host, but he was its quintessential host. He owned late-night TV in a way that only Tom Snyder could ever come anywhere near; David Letterman is fantastic at what he does, and Jay Leno has his moments, but neither of them could ever really replace Johnny, and I think they would both admit it.

NBC says Johnny passed away early this morning at the age of 79.
