Strange urge for pinot noir...

Apparently there's been a big surge in sales of pinot noir wines since the movie "Sideways" came out, and I can't say I'm surprised. I was very tempted to go back into Willow after we saw the movie last night (seity1 and I did the $20.05 dinner-and-a-movie deal, which is an incredible bargain) for a glass of wine.

Thomas Haden Church has actually been in loads of movies and TV shows since "Wings" ended a decade ago, but I think I actually never saw any of it. (I was aware of "George of the Jungle.") I've missed him! He and Paul Giamatti were both great as the stars of "Sideways," and Virginia Madsen was fantastic as well. I guess I've seen her in a few things but hadn't been paying attention. Giamatti, who wasn't nominated for an Oscar for this but has won some other awards for it, particularly impressed me in "Man on the Moon."

The movie was a lot of fun... very funny, but also surprising a few times, and by no means a slapstick comedy. I highly recommend it, and since it was nominated for five Academy Awards, it's likely to be in theatres for a bit longer. (It should also work fine on DVD or HBO or the like; other than a couple of brief glimpses of great scenery, the movie doesn't demand a big-screen viewing.)

Wine plays a "supporting actor" role in the movie, and there's quite a lot of talk about it. I'm not sure how much of the wine that's identified is from real wineries, so I won't try too hard to find those wines, but I bet a lot of folks are driving around California wine country right now looking for them! Giamatti's character's disdain for merlot amuses me. I like merlot. But I'm also definitely a fan of pinot noir; one of my favourite wines is Dr. Konstantin Frank's pinot.
