-- Lloyd Bentsen to Dan Quayle
He was an old-fashioned gentleman politician, but he was no pushover. He proved that in his vice presidential debate with Dan Quayle. Sadly, Bentsen was running on the ticket with Governor Michael Dukakis, who proved to be as much of a lightweight as Quayle. Ironically, Bentsen had beat George Bush to pick up his first Senate seat in 1970. He served for over 20 years, until leaving the Senate to serve as Secretary of the Treasury. Senator Bentsen died this morning in his Houston home, at 85.
