Insulation vs Sunlight

When it's a bright day, you're supposed to leave the shades open to let the sun stream in and help keep the house warm. When it's a cold day, you're supposed to leave the shades closed to help insulate the windows and keep the house warm.

On a really sunny day but frigid (high of 9F) like today, which is better? Open the shades to let the bright sun in? Or keep them closed to keep the existing warmth in?
