Mourning in Cooperstown and the Bronx

Flags are flying at half staff today in Cooperstown, to mark the passing this morning of Phil "The Scooter" Rizzuto, the hall-of-fame Yankees player and broadcast announcer. He was 89.

He always protested that he was never a great player and didn't belong in the Hall of Fame, but for several generations of baseball fans, he more than anyone else personified the Bronx Bombers.
