I'm watching the several minutes of flight deck video that was miraculously recovered from Columbia, and it's striking how routine everything is. After a normal re-entry, we would never see this video. It's not particularly exciting.

The video ends a few minutes before anyone would have noticed anything wrong. (The camcorder would still have been running, but the remaining tape was destroyed. Only about 13 minutes that were wound onto the take-up reel in the cassette were recovered.)

As others have observed, it's somewhat comforting to see the astronauts on the flight deck (we don't get to see the ones who were below) going about the routine pre-landing steps of putting their gloves on, checking their suit seals, and so forth, while commenting on the orange flashes of plasma outside the windows, normal for a nighttime re-entry.
