Crystal clear (214.2)

There was some weather a little while ago, for which the captain turned on the seat belt sign, but most of my travel weather today has just been awesome. It was clear and mild as we flew out of Ithaca, clear and warm in Philadelphia, and I've been getting some great photos of the Rockies with hardly a haze between us and the ground.

It's been a while since I've been in a half-empty plane. A surprising number of people have a row to themselves, including me. Soon before takeoff, a flight attendant came by and told the other guy in my row he was supposed to be in first class. He didn't argue.

I'd love to be getting first class service, as I enjoyed thanks to Delta overbooking my flight home in April, but I'm doing pretty well. Exit row, plus there's no seat in front of mine. There's a jumpseat five feet in front of me, but the flight attendant hasn't been in it since soon after takeoff.

Really looking forward to drinks with Dina tonight, and perhaps seeing others of you in the next week. I'm in San Francisco until next Friday night.

Ahhh, fresh air!

Just got back from a chunk of afternoon at the hotel pool, including some sunshine, some cool pool and some hot tub, and lots of fresh air. It felt like the low 80s, with sun and a few clouds, nice and comfortable.

Wonder Woman is probably the most-photographed attendee at Shore Leave this year! Pictures after I get home. :-) There are definitely some other fun costumes around, as well, including Stephen and Keith in mirror-universe Trek outfits.

The one celebrity I especially wanted to see, Mary McDonnell of Battlestar Galactica fame, had to cancel at the last minute when the producers needed her in California for some re-shooting of an upcoming episode. (The new season begins next week, I think.) So, I may wander into some of the celebrity talks for the heck of it, but I may also not bother. I bought perisoft's badge from marlokat (he couldn't make it) since I'd learned I needed a badge to get into the STARFLEET meeting, but I probably could have gotten away without it. Ah well. It may come in handy later anyway.

Had my annual chat with Janice Topoleski, a USS Accord member from Ithaca who I've only ever seen at Shore Leave! She was, as usual, volunteering in the blood drive, and I saw her when I went to donate, as well as downstairs earlier.

The STARFLEET Marine Corps meeting was a bust; there'd been no advance promotion, and none of the 7th Brigade (this area's part of the SFMC) leadership showed up. I guess there were five or six of us who came, and we chatted a bit before wandering off to do other things.

Hoping to find An Poitin Stil for dinner tonight; it's a Gaelic restaurant that fyrfitrmedic has raved about. Not sure whether he and mama0807 will be around for dinner, but it would be nice to spend some time with them without a loud party going on around us.

Shore Leave

Heading down to Shore Leave in Hunt Valley, MD with Denise tomorrow for the weekend, and really looking forward to it! I feel like a bit of a slacker, after only a day and a half at work this week. Well, kinda two days. But barely, thanks to getting back from LaGuardia late yesterday morning.

We're using Mike and Angel's room, which they're not using; I'll need to remember to cancel my room across the street tonight. Marlo also has a room, but probably needs someone to share... or could share ours if someone takes hers. Anyone need space?

Looking forward to the Hunt Valley's hot tub, among many other things.

Dave's Plane

Dave's Plane

Last Friday I finally got to see zikzak5's plane; he took me flying last summer to get aerial photos of my house, but it wasn't in his plane. He ended up not flying his plane to Ithaca last summer because of bad weather when he was ready to travel, and happily was able to bring it along this time.

We talked last August about him teaching me how to fly, and last week we picked up those discussions now that he's back. I was all set to join the East Hill Flying Club so he could teach me on one of their smaller, slower planes, which would be much easier to learn on.

Unfortunately, Dave was told yesterday that EHFC policy doesn't allow a member to teach a friend how to fly! So, I've been waiting for ten months and now he can't teach me in one of their planes. He'll give me some lessons in his plane, but that won't be ideal for me to learn.

Dave and I and a couple of other friends (it's a four-seater) are trying to plan a weekend jaunt by air. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather!
